MOON FORMATION
How did the Moon form? Many scientists believe a Mars-sized planet smashed into Earth around 4.5 billion year ago and its remains became the moon. But new research suggests it may have been more of a hit and run - the rogue planet crashed into Earth and kept on going.
After looking at hundreds of thousands of simulations, researchers believe the impactor hit Earth so hard that it heated debris from both planets to 10,000 degrees Celsius, which may have then merged together to form the Moon.
